Content: PLEASE do not post replies that do nothing more than bump a story to the top of the front page.
A couple of general rules:
If the story's most recent update is less than a year old, it's perfectly fine to bump it, but comment on it as you do. You want to let the author know why you like it enough that you want it to be continued. Ultra-short posts like "Cool story" or "I like this" do not accomplish that. Your bumping affects everyone, not just the author; make it worthwhile.
If the last entry by the author was more than a year ago, DON'T BUMP THE STORY. Instead, PM the author with your comment and let them know your interest in the story's continuation. I myself have unfinished pieces more than a year out of date. I'd love to know if there is any interest in my continuing them, but in no way do I want that to affect the list. Let the authors themselves post something new saying there will be more if that is the case.
Thank you.

Just to clarify, it would be nice to be able to only receive notifications once a story update has been posted, and not only a comment on the story itself.

This would, unfortunately, require recoding. I have actually discussed the notion in the past with Moo. His response was that we could create a "comments" thread, and pin it. We could do that, but getting anyone to adhere to it is a different issue altogether.

Content: PLEASE do not bump a story that has just been bumped. It's overkill: all it does is move the story up on the page yet again.
