Content: I’ve shared some parts of my story before, but the majority of people don’t know, so I’ll give some background information. This is a long post, but it’s completely true and I hope it’s encouraging.
Trigger Warning, I do talk about suicide attempts.
I used to be in a very abusive relationship. My ex wife was emotionally and psychologically abusive in more ways than I could even begin to describe. She would berate me for days or weeks over minor offenses like forgetting to take out the trash or coming home late from work.
In January 2024, after more than a year of abuse, I attempted to take my own life. When I got out of the psychiatric hospital, in my first conversation with my ex, she told me “I wish you had completed it” and from then on, in every argument we had, she would tell me to go jump off a bridge or how she wished I was dead, and that if I was good at anything I would have finished the job. Between January and July, I attempted 7 times. I had some minor issues with incontinence before this, but some of the long-term damage from these attempts was that my occasional incontinence was much harder to control. More on that later.
I ended up in a long term commitment for just over two months. By the time I got out in September, my ex had divorced me, taken every penny I had, sold most of my possessions, taken out a restraining order, and claimed to be a “victim of domestic violence” on social media and to the judge in the divorce. I was left homeless, and abandoned by most of my friends, and still wishing that I had managed to die.
I did have a couple of longstanding friends who did come to my aid. One family let me stay in their basement to get back on my feet. The original agreement was that I could stay until Christmas, but I got denied eight apartments and they extended the offer, until the end of February when they told me that they needed me to find another place to live by April 1st.
After getting denied 4 more apartments, someone suggested that I start looking into getting an RV. It was a good idea, but my ex ruined my credit score and I couldn’t finance one. I managed to find an old 401k from a previous employer and I sold everything I possibly could and managed to get about $8k in total. I started looking at facebook marketplace and I went to see dozens of options, but one by one things fell apart. I had several that sold as I was on my way to view them, I found units with black mold, flooring, falling apart, and countless other issues I was getting very discouraged.
This morning, I left my friend’s house with six listings lined up to go see. Two of them sold before I could get to see them, and the other four were in much worse condition than advertised.
On my way home earlier this afternoon, I was discouraged and stressed, and I had no idea what to do next.
Randomly, I passed an RV dealership and decided to at least ask if they had any options in my price range. No other dealership had anything in the last 4 weeks, so my hopes were not very high, but I decided to ask anyway. As usual with these kinds of dealerships, he started to show me options that were just outside of my price range and talking about financing, etc., etc. but I opened up and told him my story and why I couldn’t finance anything. At this point, I also had an accident and the diaper I was wearing today started to leak. I was so embarrassed that I almost just left, but the sales guy asked me to wait 10 minutes while he went and talked to his manager, and and I went and changed my diaper in the bathroom. Then the manager came and talked to me about my situation and said that they wanted to help.
They took me back to their service department and showed me a camper that was 10 years newer than anything I had looked at on Facebook marketplace and was honestly the nicest camper I had seen of any unit I looked at. They asked me if that one would work and I said that I would love to have that camper, but I could tell just from looking at it. The price would be at least 13 to 15,000 and I only had $8000. The service manager said come back inside and we’ll crunch some numbers, and 20 minutes later he said that they were willing to sell me that unit for $8000 out the door.
I found out later in the paperwork process that the dealership had paid $9200 for that unit, and they were planning to list it on the lot for $15,000. But the service manager said that one of their employees many years ago, had experienced a house fire and needed to live in an RV for a while. After that event, the owner of the dealership started a fund to help people in emergency situations. They help up to three people a year and they were able to sell me the unit at a loss by tapping into their assistance fund. I literally started crying in the showroom. I was 3 days away from sleeping in my car and not even having access to a shower. But now I own my own camper, and a much nicer camper than I ever imagined I could get.
I found this dealership at random, had no idea they had such a program, and I never asked for a handout. But they recognized my need and stepped up in ways I never even would have asked for. As bad as my ex was, these people today showed me how good some people can be.
I hope that if other people are struggling that they find people like the people at the dealership today that helped me. My faith in humanity was restored a lot today.
