Chapter 1: A Bond of Friendship
Sue, a high-spirited 10-year-old girl, was known for her boundless energy and love for outdoor activities. She cherished the thrill of running around and climbing trees, all while being incredibly intelligent and eager to learn. Sue’s younger brother, Peter, was a sweet and affectionate 5-year-old boy, albeit a messy one. His curious nature often led him to get into things and create a mess wherever he went.
One day, Sue’s mom approached her with exciting news: Peter was about to embark on his potty training journey. Sue felt a mix of enthusiasm for her brother’s milestone and a tinge of jealousy. After all, she had already been potty trained for years, and she couldn’t fathom why Peter was receiving all the attention.
The following day, Sue observed as her mom commenced Peter’s potty training. She watched as her mother demonstrated the process, offering Peter praise whenever he succeeded. From the sidelines, Sue couldn’t help but feel left out.
“Why are you always helping Peter?” Sue questioned her mom, a hint of frustration in her voice. “I can do it myself.”
Her mom responded with understanding, saying, “I know you can, Sue, but Peter is still learning. He needs a little extra help.”
Sue let out a sigh. Deep down, she knew her mom was right, but that didn’t alleviate her discontent.
The next few days proved to be a challenge for Sue. She continued to witness Peter receiving all the attention and support from their parents. Her mom diligently guided him through potty training, while her dad played games with him. Sue began to feel overlooked and neglected.
One day, overwhelmed with emotions, Sue rushed into the bathroom and burst into tears.
“What’s wrong, Sue?” her mom inquired, concern etched across her face.
“I’m just jealous of Peter,” Sue confessed through sobs. “He’s getting all the attention.”
Her mom enveloped her in a comforting embrace, her voice filled with empathy. “I understand it’s difficult, Sue,” she said. “But remember, Peter is still learning. He needs a little extra help.”
Sue nodded, acknowledging her mother’s wisdom. However, it didn’t immediately alleviate her emotional turmoil.
Determined to change her perspective, Sue woke up the next day with a newfound resolve. She ventured into Peter’s room and invited him to play together. Peter’s face lit up with delight, and he eagerly accepted the offer.
For hours on end, Sue and Peter engaged in various games. They laughed while playing tag, marveled at each other’s hiding spots during hide-and-seek, and even immersed themselves in Peter’s new toy car. The joy Sue experienced in their shared playtime washed away any remnants of her earlier jealousy.
In the backyard, as Sue and Peter continued their play, Peter had an accident. Sue immediately rushed to his side, helping him clean up without hesitation. Surprisingly, she didn’t mind lending a hand.
When bedtime approached, Sue embraced Peter tightly. “I’m glad we’re friends,” she expressed sincerely.
Peter beamed and replied, “Me too.”
As Sue settled into bed that night, a wave of contentment washed over her. She realized that her bond with Peter extended far beyond feelings of jealousy or competition. They were friends who would support each other unconditionally. The only lingering thought in Sue’s mind as she drifted to sleep was the incident during their playtime—how it seemed inconsequential to Peter and how he didn’t mind the pull-ups.
