Chapter 55
Sharon sat nervously in the passenger seat, repeatedly looking back to see that Billy was alright.
“Is he alright?” Rachael asked as she looked up into the rear view mirror.
“Yes, he’s fine. It’s me that’s not handling this so well.” Sharon answered.
“Feel like a new mom with a newborn, huh?” her sister asked with a smile.
Sharon, surprised, answered sheepishly “Yes, I guess that’s exactly how I feel.”.
“Don’t worry about it, it will pass soon enough.” Rachael offered with a chuckle.
Billy was mesmerized. Sitting in his carseat, he could see very well out the window, and watched the houses moving past as they drove. After a while, he looked around, noticing Mommy wasn’t anywhere to be found, and fear struck him. He didn’t want to be far from Mommy. He said “Mommy?” and started to whimper.
Sharon heard him and immediately turned her head, reached over and put her hand gently on his cheek as she said “I’m right here Baby.”.
Billy felt a lot better knowing she was near, but tried to turn his head to see her.
Sharon took her hand from his face, reached back and tapped the baby mirror that Rachael had put on the beck of his seat. “Look here Baby, you can see me.” She said lovingly.
Billy looked over where her hand was and saw Mommy’s face smiling in the mirror. “Mommy!” he said with a giggle.
“Yes Baby.” she said and laughed as she watched him. It made her feel so warm inside knowing that just seeing her made him so happy.
Bobby sat as tall as he could in his carseat, looking to see his mommy in the rear view mirror. When he saw her, he exclaimed “Mommy!” giggling as well.
“I see you Sweety!” Rachael said, as she reached back to tickle his leg.
Billy couldn’t help laughing big, baby laughs as Bobby squealed and giggled at his mommy’s touch. He smiled at Bobby as Rachael stopped tickling him.
Bobby saw Billy smiling and giggled. Reaching out, he grasped Billy’s Pooh Bear and bounced him up and down on Billy’s tummy. This had Billy giggling again and again.
“You were right, having them sit this way is perfect.” Sharon said with a laugh. The sound of their giggling was infectious.
“They’re having a ball back there the way it sounds.” Rachael agreed with a chuckle.
Sharon watched as Bobby continued to make Billy laugh. When Billy’s pacifier fell out of his mouth, she was really thankful that she’d decided to clip it to his sleeper. She chuckled suddenly as she considered what was happening.
“What?” Rachael asked.
“It was only eight days ago, Billy had been entertaining Bobby and making him giggle and laugh. Now it’s the other way around.” Sharon explained.
Rachael couldn’t help but laugh at that. “Just goes to show you, you never know what’s next.” she said.
“You’re right about that.” Sharon agreed.
Pretty soon, they were pulling into a parking space at Walmart. After she shut the engine off, Rachael said “I’m going to get a cart, I’ll be right back.” as she got out of the van and shut the door.
Sharon was grateful. She wasn’t sure she could carry Billy, in his carseat, all the way into the store. While he wasn’t really heavy, when the weight of the carseat was added, the total had to be more than fifty pounds.
A moment or two later, Bobby started looking around anxiously. “It’s OK Bobby, Mommy went to get a cart, she’ll be right back, I promise.” Sharon told him as she reached over and offered him his binky.
Bobby took his pacifier, sat back and nursed on it, apparently feeling better.
Billy saw Bobby nursing on his binky, realized he didn’t have his binky and said “Bink Mommy.”.
Sharon reached over and offered him his pacifier as she said “Here you go Baby.” with a smile. She watced him nurse a moment and the anxiety returned. “What if someone we know sees him?” she thought. Immediately after, she got angry with herself. “He’s not a monster to be hidden away.” she thought. She knew it would happen sooner or later, and she refused to be ashamed of him.
Rachael opened the door at that moment and said “I’ve got the cart.”.
Sharon said “Get in a sec, I need to take care of something.”.
Rachael, not understanding, got in and closed the door.
Bobby squirmed in his seat, reached out his arms and said “Mommy?”.
Unbuckling her seatbelt, Sharon released Bobby’s harness and lifted him from his seat, handing him to his mommy. She shifted then, so she could look directly at Billy. “Look at me Baby.” she said.
Billy turned so he could see her. She looked worried. This made him anxious.
“Sweety, we’re about to go into Walmart. I want you to understand that we may see people we know in there. I just want you to be prepared if you see one of your classmates while we’re shopping and that they may not understand why you’re dressed or behaving as you are.” she explained as she notice the bib, considered removing it, and decided against it. The last thing he needed was to get a cold because he was going around with a wet chest.
Billy froze. He hadn’t even thought about that. He knew his classmates would make fun of him if they saw him as he was right now. Instinctively, he spit his binky out. The problem was, with his binky gone, he felt much more anxious and that didn’t make it better. Starting to fuss, he said “Bink Mommy.” as tears ran down his cheeks.
She gave him his binky and said “Oh Sweety, if I could make it better I would, I promise.” with tears stinging her eyes. “You’re in a tough spot Baby, I know. You need your binky, but you don’t want your classmates seeing you nurse on it. I’m right aren’t I?” she asked.
Billy kicked his little legs as he cried quietly.
Moving closer, she looked right into his eyes and told him “You listen to me little boy. I love you just the way you are Baby. If I had the choice, I wouldn’t change a thing about you right at this moment. You can’t help the way things are, and I don’t want you to feel bad about what you need. I won’t hide you away like something I need to be ashamed of, because I most certainly am not ashamed of you. You’re the cutest, most adorable baby boy I know.” as she caressed his cheek with her palm.
That made Billy feel much better. Mommy loved him just like he was. Not only that, but if she could she wouldn’t change him back to nine. That’s all that really mattered to him right then. With these thoughts, he couldn’t help but smile at her.
Sharon saw his little smile and felt a huge weight lift from her. “Sweety, I’m going to put these in your hand.” she told him as she carefully wrapped his fingers around a set of his baby keys. "I want you to put them in your mouth if you see anyone you know. That will make it easier for you to just be Mommy’s little baby while I handle explaining what happened. Can you do that for me?"she asked.
Billy smiled bigger as he kicked his legs again. He loved Mommy so much! He knew she was trying to make it easier for him and that made him feel so good. Just then he concentrated with all his might and said “Yub you.”.
Sharon couldn’t help herself, she opened the door, got out of her seat and quickly made her way to the other side of the vehicle and opened the door. Releasing the latch on his harness, she picked him up and hugged him tightly. “I love you too Baby! So very much!” she said with a thick voice.
Rachael sat cuddling Bobby close to her. She couldn’t help it as tears made her cheeks wet. She was so proud of her sister, she couldn’t find words to express how proud she was. Getting out of the van with Bobby held close, she leaned over and kissed her sister on the cheek saying “He couldn’t want for a better mommy.” and then moved to put Bobby in the seat of the basket. She reached over and pressed the buttons that released the top part of Billy’s carseat and put it in the lower part of the basket.
Sharon smiled. Rachael couldn’t have given her a better compliment at that point in time. “Thank you.” she told Rachael.
“I just calls 'em as I sees 'em.” Rachael responded with a chuckle. “Let’s get them in out of the cold Sis.” she added as she started to move toward the store, pausing for a second to push the lock button on her key faub.
Sharon walked beside the basket holding Billy close. Once they got inside the store, she shifted him a bit so she could get his jacket off, leaving him in his sleeper. Laying him down in his seat, she saw a baby boy, dressed in a sleeper with an obvious diaper bulge. She thought about buckling the harness to make the diaper less obvious, but seeing the baby keys in his hand, the wet bib he was wearing and him nursing on his binky, she left him as he was. Reading the words ‘I love my Mommy’ written on the bib again, she couldn’t help smiling as she remembered he had just told her he loved her. “Thank you God, for giving me this beautiful little boy.” she prayed.
Billy watched Mommy. He could see the love she had for him in her eyes. He couldn’t help kicking his legs and giggling with glee at how that look made him feel.
Sharon reached down and tickled his fuzzy tummy as she said “There’s my happy baby.” with a big smile.
The smiling door greeter said “He’s adorable.” as Billy giggled.
“Thank you.” Sharon said. “I wouldn’t trade him for anything in the world.” she added.
