The Unmaking Of Ann
The Unmaking Of Ann
Written by Baby BrrrI started writing the Unmaking of Ann based on some old memories I had from when I was younger. I never experienced anything like Ann in the story, but I would have loved for some of this to have happened to me! I will continue this story at some stage.Part OneAnn wasn't really a bad girl - she was 16, and as with all teenagers at her age, unwilling to bend to the constant rules that her parents seemd to delight in imposing upon her. This time though, she'd gone too far (in her parent's eyes at least). The end result of her rebelliousness - St. Austine's Boarding School for Girls.Part oneSince her parents had left her, she'd not spoken to anyone... ignored any attempts at communication... and been blatantly rude to the school Matron who was obviously just trying to comfort her. Stripped of her family, her friends and her life - she felt as if the whole world was against her. The whole thing had happened so fast, and now she was so alone. The dinner bell rang and Ann looked around to see what the others were doing. Following by example, she made her way to the dining room, only to be intercepted on the way by the Matron... smiling toward her. Ann turned away in embarrassment of the obvious pity that was being diplayed... but more so out of spite. This wasn't lost on the Matron, a sensitive person who had experience with difficult girls. The moment passed and Ann found herself facing a room full of girls around her age sitting down at tables and getting ready for the evening meal."You're new here aren't you? Come and sit with us... there's room over here" offered one of the older girls as she gestured to an empty seat in an otherwise packed table. Ann, somewhat nonchalantly, walked over and seated herself in their company to the predictable exclaimations and introductions... blank faces whose names were forgotten as soon as they were uttered. As the meal was served and they all involved themselves in the meal, Ann was accutely aware of the scrutiny being paid to her by the other girls. Some curiosity of her own allowed her to glance around herself... but more often than not she turned quickly away as she crossed someone else looking at her. Whilst she ate the meal, she remembered little of it.Later that evening, after getting ready for bed, Ann started to feel more homesick that she could have imagined. Tomorrow would be her first day at school... too many firsts for her liking... she felt like her emotions were on a rollercoaster."Would you like a mug of cocoa? We're making some before lights out." announced one of the girls over in the corner. And as the rest of the dormitary looked on, Ann nodded (more out of instinct than anything else). "I'll bring some over." said the girl as she left for the kitchen.Shortly she returned with a tray of drinks which she shared to some of the other girls before bringing a cup to Ann. Gratefully, Ann took the handle and thanked her for her generousity. She didn't notice the strange smile on the girl's face... nor the undue attention being paid to her by some of the other girls in the dorm.As she finished the cocoa, and started to settle herself into bed, the Matron came around to say something to each of them. Ann faked being asleep, and as she approached, the Matron's eyes became somewhat hardened. As she walked away she announced "Lights out girls... see you in the morning. Sleep tight." And with that the room was plunged into darkness. The sound of bedclothes being rustled and muffled whispers soon faded into quiet, and Ann wept into a deep sleep."Wake up! You don't want to be late to breakfast!", were the first words she heard as she opened her eyes onto a dormitary full of bright daylight and girls finishing getting dressed for the day ahead. A sudden panic attack jolted her to awakeness as it dawned on her where she was and that she hadn't dreamed anything... she was really here.As she moved to get up out of bed, she felt a dampness in her bed - and with a gut wrenching certainty she knew she'd wet herself in the night! She hadn't done anything like that since she could remember! The accute embarrassment caused her to turn bright red, and she froze with no idea what to do."Come on Ann, we haven't got all day. Up you get now.", lectured the Matron as she appeared from nowhere. In one movement she gripped Ann's bedclothes and stripped them from the bed. There was a moment of silence as the other girls looked on, and then in a fit of realisation, the Matron thrust her handful back at a red-faced Ann."Alright, everyone to breakfast... promptly now. Hurry up!", commanded the Matron as she looked around the room staring at each of the girls around the room. As the dormitary cleared, the Matron pulled over a chair and sat down beside Ann."I know things haven't gone too well for you up till now, Ann. Let's just get you cleaned up shall we? You can put your dirty laundry in the hamper over there, and get a shower before the others finish breakfast." Ann didn't know what to do... didn't know what to say... she was just grateful to the Matron for her discretion. As the Matron left the room she called back "Come on over to the infirmary when you are done, dear. We'll have some tea and a chat over there." Ann was hardly in a position to complain, and quickly set about concealing the mess that she'd made of both herself and the bed.
