Content: this is a story written by myself, first story ever, have fun reading it,
My name is sarah and my partners name is helen, we for a couple of years have fostered couple little boys, but we always wanted to have a forever little boy, andy at the time was 17 years old, autistic and very infantile, he was very small for his age, 1th percentile height and weight, looked more like a 8 year old and he was very cute, andy up to the age a 8 was not potty trained, he was still wet in the day time until he was 13, andy never learnt to be dry at nights, his education was still very low, he did not read or write until he was 8, school felt the need to not place him in with the main age groups but to keep him in with the infants, at the age of 13 school gave up on andy and he was home educated, giving his mother time to treat andy in the infantile way he was, at 15 his family doctor started to get worried about andy’s infantile behaviours, andy never had any friends only snowy his soft toy,
We were told by somebody in the local authorities that andy would be needing somewhere to live, he was autistic and had many issues, he was over the legal age of 16, so he could move straight in,
Dr John, placed andy under the care of Dr Davis psychiatric, pioneering psychiatric with some strange treatments, he thought andy would do better if he was regressed back into a infant, this would be done as a 8 week stay in hospital,
Andy was taken onto a adolescents ward, andy’s parents were not aloud to take him,
After an hour, a nurse came up to andy’s bed, the big boys on this ward wish to watch a film tonight, we think you need to be sleeping, so we’re going to move you,
He was taken to the children’s ward, after half hour a nurse came up to andy, carrying a nappy, we should put this under your bottom, we don’t want wet sheets, after he was placed in a nappy, the nurse gave him a table and he fell fast asleep, on waking up, andy had moved wards, now he woke up to the sound of a little boy crying, on opening his eyes, he saw cartoon figures on the walls and he was in a cot,
Me and sarah made contact with the hospital, as andy may be coming to live in our house, we did not get much information from the ward staff, but we were told after 8 weeks andy would need somewhere to live and andy is not like many other 17 year olds he has complex needs, me and sarah were interested now.
We had a quick telephone call off a member of ward staff, saying Dr Davis had visited andy on the ward, we were told andy was placed in a environment that would meet his needs and Dr Davis had preceded the use of nappies for andy and if andy was coming to live at your home, he would be discharged in nappies and most likely be needing some assistant to change his nappies,
We were very interested in andy, now,
Second day, we rang the ward, to ask if we could visit andy, the nursing staff said, you can visit the ward, but not andy, we will let you see him, but from the next bed, so andy does not get upset,
The next morning, early we visited the ward, we were surprised to be guided into the infant ward, the nurse took us to a cot that had a 2 year old girl in it, there next to that cot was andy, sleeping in a cot, on his name board was, andy, autism, incontinent, i looked at sarah and smiled,
We spent 10 minutes pretending to be visiting this little girl, them we made our way back to the nurses station, the nurse said, andy is special, he will need a bit of care if your having him at your home, you know Dr Davis has put andy back in nappies, i can not say why he has done that, but the little boy you see sleeping in that cot will need a lot of love when he is discharged,
Later on in the day, we had a telephone call off Dr Davis, I can not tell you much about andy, but my team and the local authority do not wish andy to attend his family home after we have discharge him from hospital, if your happy to have andy at your home after he is discharged, that would be great, little bit about andy, he is autistic, he is very infantile and he will be in nappies and he will receive free nappies, i am sure over the next 8 weeks somebody will fill you in,
Third day, we had a lady from the local authority visit us at home, we sat in the living room, talking about couple of the forster children we looked after, do you remember tommy, he was a lovely boy, he was about 2 when he came to you, I bet you still have many of his items in your cupboard, do you still have his bottles what about his dummies (we answered yes)
Later on that day, we had a telephone call off the ward sister, saying Dr Davis has given me the rights to tell you, you can visit andy,
That night, we made our way to the wards, nurse guided us to andy’s cot, andy was half asleep, he looked very cute, another nurse came to see us carrying a sippy cup, do you want to give andy this, he’ll needs some help to hold it, after assisting andy to take a drink, I cheeky slipped my hand under the covers and found his pyjama bottoms, a gentle feel of andy’s nappy, I smiled at helen, then guided her hand, we both smiled, andy was wet, on leaving the ward, one of the health care assistants came up to us, are you two leaving right now, give me a couple of minutes, i have something i wish to share with you, but not in here,we hung around outside the ward waiting, when the health care assistant came off duty, we walked outside of the building, i have something to share with you about andy, that the nurses or doctors can’t, do you know that andy is under a psychiatric (we answered yes) do you know andy has some major issues (we answered yes) the treatment andy is getting, is to regress his development milestones, so when andy comes out of hospital he will need some help, if your happy looking after a special needs boy, yes boy, i will have a queit word with the ward sister, all off the records,
We kept visiting andy in the first week, not much had changed,
Second week, we had a strange telephone message from the health care assistant, ward sister has asked, if you would like to visit andy at 4-30pm and stay until 8pm, we arrived at the ward little bit early, but had no issues the staff let us on to the ward, as we were sat at the cot side, a nurse came up to us, you timed that right, would you like to assist feeding andy, 10 minutes later, the trolley came onto the ward, sarah can you come here (talking to me) i headed to the trolley, andy will need to wear this, as she handed me a bib, i dropped the cotside and pulled the bib over andy’s head, the nurse came to the cot carrying a tray, come on little mister, it’s din din time, the nurse turned to us and said, andy will need assistant to feed, them i noticed the bowl, it looked like baby food, i asked the nurse is this puree, nurse replied, yes, Dr Davis has told us not to waste any time on andy, andy is here for a reason and he should be on the same routine as all the other children that are in nappies, We smiled, at the throught, after we feed andy, a nurse came onto the ward, she went around all 6 cots, harry, wet will need changing, john wet and soiled needs changing, until they came to andy, we both where sat by his cotside, nurse came, pulled his covers away and pulled down his pyjama bottoms, opened his legs, andy wet and soiled, needs changing, couple minutes after that, you heard a trolley being wheeled onto the ward, by the health care assistant, she headed straight to harry, no closing the curtains, his nappy was changed infront of us, then john’s nappy was changed infront of us, by time she came to andy, we had moved to one side of the cot, both of us standing up to get a better view, she walked up to andy, she lifted his legs, slipped a bed mat under him, undoing the tapes, she said to us, andy is now having little accidents in the day and night, i asked her, does he have trouble with keeping his nappy clean, replied yes over the last couple of weeks, Dr Davis has refused him access to a bedpan, andy has been opening his bowels in his nappy, it’s the same with his pee pee, i looked at the health care assistant changing andy’s nappy, knowing he was coming home to us like this, if your here tomorrow night, i can get you to change andy’s nappy, For the next 2 weeks we attended the ward at the same time, we feed andy and changed his nappy most nights,
Week 4, as normal we attended the ward, this time at the end, sister came up to us, would 1 of you like to stay the night, we can put you up in the parents side room, i looked a helen, she looked back a me, that is brilliant i said, thank you, i can do that, helen you run off back home, see you tomorrow, as sister walked me to the sideroom, she took my hand and said, think it’s time to see what we have been doing to andy, think 24 hours will show you that,
I was sat by andy’s cot, when a nurse came onto the ward, by now it was 9pm, the lights were turned down, she came up to andy, rolled him over, pulled the back of his pyjamas away, time for a nappy change, get you ready for bed, without a blink of an eye, andy was changed, in came the health care assistant pushing a small trolley, that had bottles on it, she went over to 2 cots, handed them a bottle each, them handed andy and the girl a bottle, i was very surprised, without any fuss, andy took the bottle, popped the teat into his mouth, i watched his sucking on that bottle for 5 minutes, them he fell quiet, the health care assistant returned, carrying something in her hand, as she collected the bottle she placed a dummy in andy’s mouth, she turned to me and said, he needs a dummy to sleep, but tomorrow we can try him on a dummy all day, 9-30pm i retired to bed, next morning, i woke up around 6am, made my way to the ward, andy was half asleep, still sucking a dummy, he looked like a little angel, about 10 minutes later, the night sister came to me, quietly spoken, today is a big day for andy, his regression is going well, i looked at her, what regression, did Dr Davis not tell you, andy is being regressed back to an infant, this will help andy as his needs are very infantile and it will assist his carers, today we step up his regression, you can help with this, we are not removing his dummy, so can you reinsure him it’s ok and replace his dummy and tomorrow andy can get out of his cot, looking at andy she replies, he looks very peaceful you could never tell he was 17, as she lowers the coside and gently rolls andy over, she pulls his pyjamas down and turns to me, andy has had a lovely sleep, look at his nappy, he is soaking wet and he’s had a small accident, she said, it was funny watching over andy last night, he was having some good dreams and he was giggling in his sleep, would you like to change his nappy before he wakes up fully, i gently changed his nappy, them kissed his cheeks, on that he woke up as he lost grip of his dummy, as i retrieved his dummy and replaced it back into his mouth, it’s ok, mama is here, at 7am, the health care assistant came onto the ward pushing a trolley, wakey wakey, let’s check them bottoms and we can have breakie, sarah i believe you have changed andy’s nappy, but can you check it again, lowering the cotside and pulling away the bed covers, them pulling away andy’s pyjamas bottoms, i felt his nappy, top feels dry, but he feels a little bit wet, under the leg, i smiles, i only changed him an hour ago, turning to see the health care assistant, he ok, little bit wet, can i ask, is this normal for andy, as he has not lasted an hour without staying dry, she replies yes, andy’s bladder is now very small, we put andy through an CT image couple weeks ago, Dr Davis is very happy with the size of andy’s bladder, i ask the her about andy’s bowel movements, yes andy has some control over his bowels but not much, the day went on like that, me feeding him and changing him, loads of encouragement to keep his dummy in place,
At 4-30pm helen arrived, i needed to speak with her, helen we need to change our plans for andy, what helen replied, change what plans, i hope you not having second thoughts about andy, no no helen, you know we were expecting andy to be around the mental age of 6, we need to change that to 2, yes he wets himself, and he has soiling accidents, but andy is coming home as a baby, a baby that we can keep, without any paperwork,
The next day, i was told that Dr Davis was attending the hospital today plus it andy’s big day,
9am Dr Davis walks into the ward, he walks straight up to andy’s cot, nurse and sister following behind, he grads andy’s records off the bed, nurse drop the cot sides please, he removes the bed covers, good i can see andy is in a nappy, is he wet, the nurse removes the pyjamas bottoms, yes he is wet, has he past a stoll today, yes said the nurse, nurse i wish you to carry out 2 tests today, first can you remove his nappy and dress him in normal clothing with no nappy on and take him for a short walk around the hospital, we need to see if he is now dependent on nappies and if he shows all traits of regression, i have arranged it for andy to have breakfast in the hospital restaurant, staff are expecting him, once you done that, dress him back in nappy take him to the public lobby, check his nappy in full view of the passing visitors, we need to see if he shows any sign of embarrassment, he turns to me, mum you can go with him to, he be very unsteady on his feet,
It was strange seeing my little boy trying to stand up for the first time, it was like watching a toddler taking his first steps, it felt weird watching the nurse dress him in underpants and pyjamas, the long walk across the ward, it was like a toddler, crawl and walk, fall, it took 5 minutes, to walk to the ward door, on making it to the door, the nurse spotted a small wet patch on andy’s pyjamas, the walk along the corridor was even slower half way along the corridor andy had a small tantrum, the restaurant was empty, i wondered what has Dr Davis done to andy he even walks like a toddler, we sat at the table, the severing staff came over, is this andy, wound andy like porridge and a glass of coke, she returned back with that order, andy started to play with his food, putting his hands in the bowl, he tried to grasp the glass, but got it wrong, all of a sudden andy went very quiet, he looked down and started to cry, the serving staff member asked, what is wrong andy, me me messy, that’s ok said the serving staff, we can clean the messy up,
The nurse gave me a wink and pointed to the chair, i noticed it, andy’s pyjamas bottoms were soaking wet, the nurse then lowered the pyjamas bottoms and looked at his pants, this is what andy is crying for, we have had a little accident we better take you back to the ward and clean your bottom, we made it back to the ward, after andy was cleaned up and fitted in a nappy, his dummy was places in his mouth and the nurse handed him his teddy bear, this was the test i really wanted to be part of, andy’s reaction to being treated like a baby in public,
Andy was still walking like a toddler, we made our way down the corridor, we turned left, into a bigger public seating area, the nurse stopped, she put her hand inside andy’s pyjamas bottoms, she looked at andy, no sign of embarrassment, she lowered his pyjamas bottoms, no sign of embarrassment, she replaced the pyjamas bottoms and watched to a area, that had a rocking horse in it, she encouraged andy to lay on the floor, he did without any fuss and she removed his pyjamas bottoms, no sign of embarrassment, the nurse said, would you like to go on the horsie, andy climbed up with a little bit of help, sat on a rocking horse just in his pyjama tops and a nappy. sucking on his dummy, i felt really special witnessing this, this will be our little boy in a couple of weeks,
The next week, andy’s regression really did start to kick in, he was aloud to play in the playroom, he took bottles sat on the floor of the playroom and had his nappy changed in there to, andy started to walk around the ward, still like a toddler, the nurses sometimes did not put him in pyjamas, just left his naked in his nappy,
Andy was walking around the ward just in a nappy with his dummy in his mouth, when a couple of parents visiting there little walked in, i heard the dad turn to mum, he is to old for that, he must be 8, them i heard the mum say, it’s ok, he is autistic, think he has not grown up yet, this made me smiles, our little boy can get away with that,
At home, we decided to decorate andy’s bedroom, in a nursery style, we purchased a large baby gate for his door and we dug out all of tommy’s baby stuff out from the back of the cupboards, we had a very strange conversation with the hospital, before collecting andy, they wanted us to attend a special clinic,
Last week of andy’s hospital stay, we know we be receiving free nappies from the hospital, it was all booked in, when the delivery driver attended, we did not realise how many nappies andy was getting, 6 a day, 3 months worth in 1 delivery,
The big day, as we had a strange appointment before we collected andy, we got to the hospital early, we drove to this clinic, parked up outside, we were shown into see a nice old lady, retired nurse, is your car outside, yes we replied, i will meet by your car, we have something to do to your car, 10 minutes later, she meet us by the car, 2 gents followed her, carrying a couple of boxes, your going to need these 2 items, 1 gent started to unpack his box, is that a baby pushchair, no replies the lady, it’s a special needs pushchair, the other gent was opening his box, inside was a very large car seat, we will fit that for you, if you leave your car here, i will come with you to the wards, so i can get the straps right in this pushchair, on entering the ward for the last time, it felt very strange, going to collect a 17 year old boy, that now is only 2,
Andy was dressed and ready for going home, the nice old lady encourage andy to sit in his pushchair, 5 minutes of playing around with the straps, she looked at me and said, there you go, let’s get you ready, click, mum he’s all yours, as we started to leave the ward, the ward sister came to say her goodbyes, just incase he has a little accident on the way home, you can have these, she handed over 5 nappies, as you have been such a good boy, open your mouth, as she put a dummy in his mouth,
Wheeling our new little boy through the hospital, made me think, this must be how new mums and dads feel like, we are so lucky, i got back to our car, the gents had fitted the car seat, the nice lady said, click, out you get, opening the rear car door, there was a car seat, the nice lady said, this is your special seat, come and try it, seat down here, she turned to me and said, at this point it is always a good idea, to check his nappy, her hand lowered the front of my trousers, he’s a bit wet, if you know he is dry at the start of any journey you are not worrying about it all the way along your journey, with that i heard a click, he’s all safe now, i see he has a change bag on the front seat, have you got him a drink in there, yes i replied, ok this car seat has a built in bottle holder, hand me his drink, there you go, let’s take off the top so you can have a drink,
